l'autrice racconta la sua esperienza di viaggio attraverso il deserto australiano, dopo aver vissuto con gli aborigeni

È stato un best seller internazionale (negli USA ha venduto oltre un milione di copie, in Italia ha
venduto oltre 600.000 copie) ed è stato al centro di numerose controversie riguardanti la veridicità dei fatti
narrati nel libro. L'autrice stessa ammetterà in seguito a queste critiche che molti dei fatti raccontati nel Diario
sono romanzati.

Marlo Morgan, una dottoressa americana, viene invitata in Australia per ricevere un premio e
si ritrova nel deserto in compagnia di un gruppo di aborigeni, la "Vera Gente", che bruciano ogni suo oggetto
occidentale e la invitano in un viaggio-avventura attraverso una terra che le appare ostile. Lontana dal mondo
civilizzato, senza abiti né denaro, inizia il suo viaggio nell'Outback australiano, percorrendo 2000 chilometri in
quattro mesi, a piedi nudi, in totale simbiosi con una natura generosa, ma implacabile.
Dopo il primo forte impatto
fatto di dolore fisico, fame e sete, Marlo comincia a capire la natura del premio: un viaggio spirituale, una vera

Marlo Morgan self-published a book in 1990 titled Mutant Message Down Under, which chronicles the journey of a
middle-aged, white, American woman with a group of 62 desert Aborigines, the "Real People", across the continent of
Australia. The author states the book was written after the fact inspired by actual experience.
“Mutant
Message Down Under” quickly attained word of mouth popularity with the New Age movement in the United States, was
picked up for bookstore distribution by Bookpeople, then consequently picked up by giant publishing firm HarperCollins,
and marketed as fiction by them. Nearly a million copies of the HarperCollins publication have been sold around the
world. Morgan completed many lecture tours promoting the book in the United States and Europe. In her lectures Ms Morgan
speaks of her actual experience with the "Real People" and states she is an Aborigine.
